Ackerts Make $1 Million Multi-Year Gift to CPIC
President Faust and Dean Hammonds Also Announce University-Wide Public Service Committee

In an effort to support the ongoing commitment to public service by Harvard students and alumni/ae, President Drew Faust announced that Charlotte Chen Ackert '76 and David Ackert are making a generous, multi-year donation of $1 million to the Center for Public Interest Careers (CPIC) at Harvard College. The Ackerts' gift has already allowed CPIC to hire a second Fellow to assist with outreach and strategic programmatic efforts for the Center.

President Faust and Dean Hammonds also announced the appointment of a University-wide Public Service Committee. They have appointed this committee to investigate and make recommendations regarding actions [that should be considered] to improve the support of our undergraduates in identifying and pursuing work and career opportunities across a broad range of fields, including public service and the nonprofit sector (from the Charge to the Public Service Committee).

Over a hundred students, staff, and alumni/ae who have worked alongside of CPIC celebrated President Faust and Dean Hammonds' announcements and the Ackerts' gift at a reception in University Hall on November 13.

The Ackerts have been involved with the CPIC Fellowship and Internship Program in New York, volunteering time to mentor students and providing financial support for internship opportunities at WLIW, the Public Broadcasting Station based in New York. Charlotte Ackert has worked closely with CPIC Founder and New York Area Coordinator, Nick Beilenson '58, HLS '61, to plan seminars and social events for students in New York.

Since 2001, CPIC has responded to student interest in public service by providing paid fellowship and internship opportunities to over 1,000 students through its six programs across the country. Last year, 143 students were supported through CPIC programs. Through CPIC, students pursued internship and fellowship opportunities in several areas, including public health, public interest law, education, community development, the arts, public administration and policy development.

The Ackerts' donation will allow CPIC to meet several strategic goals, ranging from alumni/ae engagement and outreach to relaunching the Fellowship and Internship Program in Los Angeles in the next year. With this funding, CPIC has also hired a second CPIC Fellow, Diana Wan '08, to provide additional staff support for programming.

The CPIC Fellowship and Internship Program is supported by alumni/ae volunteers in six cities: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. All alumni/ae who are interested in sponsoring CPIC internships or fellowships are encouraged to contact Amanda Sonis Glynn at asglynn@fas.harvard.edu or 617.496.8622. To learn more about CPIC, please visit www.cpic.fas.harvard.edu.
