CPIC-Heckscher Fund for Service Internship (FSI) Program

The Center for Public Interest Careers (CPIC) at Harvard has established the CPIC-Heckscher Fund for Service Internship (FSI) Program with funding from the Heckscher Foundation for Children of New York City.

Through this program, CPIC will place 20 Harvard undergraduates as 10-week, full-time summer Interns in non-profit organizations or government agencies committed to improving the lives of children and youth in the New York City Metro Area. There will be no financial commitment required from Host Organizations; CPIC will pay each Intern a $3,500 stipend and will provide housing assistance.

Summer Interns will be assigned a Harvard alumnus/a as a mentor and will meet with him or her during the summer. In addition, CPIC will provide a weekly seminar program and other professional development related activities. As a host organization, you will have the opportunity to host one of these seminars, and you will be expected to permit your Intern to attend the other sessions.

The CPIC-Heckscher Fund for Service Internship (FSI) Program application will be available in late October. Applications will be due on January 29, 2009.

Applications for the CPIC-Heckscher FSI Program are due on January 31, 2008 by 5 pm. Please drop off applications to Phillips Brooks House, Room 303.

Host Organizations

If you are a part of a non-profit organization that is interested in applying to the CPIC-Heckscher FSI Program, please contact Leanne Gaffney at gaffney@fas.harvard.edu. Host Organizations participate in a competitive process where only the most qualified organizations will be selected.

CPIC expects Host Organizations to offer challenging assignments to summer Interns. An Intern should have varied experience, gain an overview of an organization's mission and core activities, and be well-supervised.

Possible work areas include research and policy analysis, production of written materials, and direct service to children and youth. The CPIC-Heckscher Fund for Service Internship Program is intended to give students the opportunity to work in the public service sector with non-profit and public interest organizations that serve children while also encouraging them to pursue public interest careers beyond college.

CPIC will solicit application materials from Harvard undergraduates and select a candidate who best fits the needs of your organization. All organizations have the opportunity to decline candidates if they choose to do so.
